History

  • It is difficult to separate the “The Maine Military Historical Society, Inc (MMHS) and the “Maine Armed Forces Museum”.

  • The Maine Military Historical Society, Inc. was established in July 1984 and became a non-profit Corporation in 1986.

  • It operates under the Board of Directors.

  • The original Museum located a Camp Keyes in (Building 6) was opened on 12 October 1988 and was certified by the Department of the Army Center of Military History. The original building (Bldg. 6) was constructed to house mules and horses.

  • In 2013, the Maine State Legislature placed the Museum in State Law, Title 1, Sec. 1. 1 MRSA §227. The museum operated by the Maine Military Historical Society, or a successor organization, is the official state military history museum under the Department of Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management, Military Bureau and is known as the Maine Armed Forces Museum.

  • The Legislature challenged the Museum to tell the story of all Maine service men and women, regardless of their branch of military service.

  • In 2015, the Museum was told that Building 6, the old stable, was to be torn down and the Museum would need to transfer its holdings to another location in the near future.

  • Working with the Adjutant General, MMHS was able to secure another facility.

  • Building 5 was designated as the new location, and once renovated moving the collection began in the winter of 2019.

  • Museum location was delayed several years due to the COVID 19 outbreak in the spring of 2020.

  • Here we are today more than 40 years later.
